Ear Candles are an ancient and natural therapy handed down by many civilizations. It is believed that the Ancient Greeks used ear candles, probably initially for cleansing, purifying and healing on a spiritual basis, but much later on a physical basis, using them to treat ear and head problems. The practice reached the modern world via the native North American Hopi Indians hence the name Hopi Ear Candles.
The ear candle is actually a cotton cone, impregnated with beeswax, honey and therapeutic oils. When the candle is lit it generates a gentle, warm heat which combined with the theraputic oils gently massages the eardrum. The flame of the candle (when the candle is properly seated in the ear) produces a light suction action or vacuum which pulls the wax, fungus, candida, yeast, and other particles of debris out of the ear and up into the bottom of the candle, which can then be removed. This is known as the chimney principle. The flow of air within the ear candle creates a circulation of concentrated vapour, this is soothing, calming and protects the irritated areas and can help to regulate the pressures inside the ear.
Most impurities or deposits are carried away through the candle 'chimney', although some of them can be found in the lower section of the candle
What happens during a Hopi Ear Candling Treatment?
A Hopi Ear Candling Treatment lasts approximately 40 minutes.
The treatment will normally be performed on a massage table, fully clothed.
Hopi Ear Candling is a very relaxing treatment which begins by stimulating the face, this involves gently pressing the pressure points to relax the facial muscles, increase circulation and drain the sinuses.
The client will then lie on their side or with their face to the side, whichever is most comfy. The ear candle is lit and gently inserted into the opening of the ear. The face is protected from any debris with a soft cloth. The ear candle will be allowed to burn down to the marker allowing the chimney effect to take place. This is a most relaxing and pleasurable experience. The spent ear candle will then be removed and the process will be repeated with the other ear with a fresh ear candle.
The treatment is finished with a mini facial massage which is a lovely way to further relax you and end the therapy.
Should you wish, the remains of the ear candles can be cut open open. You will be able to view the contents that have been removed from your ears.
Some wax could even work its way up to the surface of the ear 24-48 hours after the treatment.
